Part Time Maternity Cover to 31 May 2013

The School of Languages and Social Sciences is an ambitious, expanding, multidisciplinary School with an established reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The Politics and International Relations subject group is seeking a maternity cover teaching only appointment from 1 September 2012. Strong candidates from all directions of the international relations segment of the political science discipline are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should also have a post graduate degree in a relevant area and experience of teaching in International Relations and Politics, specifically the history of political thought, contemporary European political history and security studies. A doctorate in a relevant social science discipline would be advantageous though is not essential.

This is a maternity cover post until 31 May 2013 or until the current post holder returns, whichever is soonest.

La Trobe University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is looking to appoint a Professor or Associate Professor in International Development.

International Development has been taught for many years at La Trobe, both as a major within the general BA and more recently as a separate degree, the Bachelor of International Development. It is situated within the School of Social Sciences, and is an interdisciplinary programme, with participation of staff from anthropology, history, politics, sociology, as well as other disciplines. It is characterized by a commitment to critical engagement with development practice. The Faculty emphasises the importance of high quality teaching, excellent research and contributions to the wider community.

The position

The successful applicant will provide leadership to the development of La Trobe's research and teaching capacity in International Development, both in the position of Director of the Institute of Human Security (IHS) and as a Professor or Associate Professor in the School of Social Sciences. As Director of IHS, he or she will develop La Trobe's capacity to bid successfully for research money and increase the Institute's role in national debates on efficacious policy in international development. He or she will also play a major role in the newly established Masters of International Development, attract and supervise higher degree research students and contribute to the undergraduate teaching in International Development.

The candidate

A candidate with the following attributes is sought:

  • A relevant doctoral qualification and a record of research excellence, including success in winning competitive grants, in the field of International Development.
  • Experience in teaching international development at either undergraduate or postgraduate level.
  • Capacity to provide leadership to the area of International Development.
  • Understanding of the field of International Development as it is practiced both nationally and internationally.

Regional expertise in South Asia, South East Asia, Latin America, or the Pacific is desirable, however applicants with other areas of regional expertise are encouraged to apply.
